Sleep and mental health share a bidirectional relationship. Poor sleep can contribute to mental health problems, while mental health conditions often disrupt sleep. ## How Sleep Affects Mental Health During sleep, your brain performs essential functions: processing emotions and consolidating memories, clearing metabolic waste products, regulating neurotransmitters involved in mood, and restoring cognitive functions. ## Sleep Hygiene Strategies **Environment:** Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Reserve the bed for sleep only. Remove electronic devices. **Habits:** Maintain consistent sleep and wake times. Limit caffeine, especially after noon. Avoid screens 1-2 hours before bed. Create a relaxing bedtime routine. If sleep problems persist despite good sleep hygiene, or if they are accompanied by mental health symptoms, professional evaluation is recommended.
